This article examines the case of Anna O. (Bertha Pappenheim), a pivotal case in the history of psychoanalysis. It argues that the case was neither a catharsis nor a cure as initially described, and that historical research reveals a significantly different outcome, shedding new light on the motives of Josef Breuer and Sigmund Freud.
